They Don’t Play My Music on the Radio… Yet
I love music. I’m almost constantly listening to something. But I rarely listen to the radio; there are no stations locally that play what I enjoy. However, I am doing my part to help change that.
Our main local station, up until a few months ago, was an oldies station, playing the same stale handful of Beach Boys and Elvis songs day in and day out. Then one day, I was walking past the station on my way to work and stopped dead in my tracks. They pipe the radio station onto the sidewalk through a big speaker; instead of Chubby Checker, they were playing Smashing Pumpkins. I was in shock. They now play “Classic Hits,” a mix of the 70s through the 90s.
Yesterday, the new station manager called where I work to see when he could stop in to introduce himself to the boss and drop off his business card. I told him that I love what they’d done with the station. He asked me what I like about it, and we started talking music. I told him that a good percentage of what I listen to I will likely never hear on the radio because it’s not on that magical list of “radio songs.” He asked me what I listen to, and I named a few bands he hadn’t heard of; Procupine Tree, Coheed & Cambria, that kind of thing. He asked if I would be working today, and I told him it was my day off. Then he asked if I could come down and meet with him for coffee and bring him some CDs to listen to.
So it was that I found myself sitting down to talk music for an hour with station manager Matt this morning. I gave him a couple of discs to check out, and after our conversation, I have a few more things I need to get to him. And if he likes what he hears, my music will finally be on the radio around here! Yay!
If I play my cards right, who knows? Maybe I can weasel my way into a radio show of my own! How awesome would that be??

That would be really cool! Good luck!
